Limits: Slowing Down

After living in New York City, I naturally adapted a go, go, go lifestyle. Whether it’s juggling work demands, social obligations or endless to do lists there is always something to keep our minds occupied. It’s so easy for us to hop on board the busy train, however, it’s necessary for us to understand our limits to live a balanced lifestyle. Currently, I’m planning my wedding, working full time and training which leaves little down time. This concept of rest and “slowing down” seemed so contradictory to my lifestyle. Recently after going weeks without relaxing I realized this is something I must do to really enjoy all my hard work. Below, I put a list of tips that helped me slow down and live more in the present.

Create Margins: A friend of mine gave me this tip and it really stuck with me. Being in the present can be hard when our thoughts are constantly wandering. Create margins to focus your thought life in the current moment. When at work focus only on your tasks and view that time as your work margin. Once you leave work, mentally go into your next margin which is your personal life and focus on that. When you’re with social groups, enjoy that time and don’t let other thoughts of work or personal responsibilities creep in. This idea of living within margins will help you be more in the moment while keeping your thoughts on what you can control at that point in time.

Dedicate a Day of Leisure/Rest: For most people this is usually Sunday’s, however, this can take place any day of the week. Dedicate time to enjoying a hobby you love, resting or spending time with a loved one. When doing this, stay away from your everyday distractions and focus on really enjoying yourself. This time away from your normal routine will energize and allow you to enjoy life to the fullest. Also, plan to get your work and responsibilities done before this day so you can make the most of your time without feeling guilty.

Be Kind to Yourself: As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. The expectations you have for yourself shouldn’t be so high that you take the joy out of life. Be kind to yourself and know you are doing the best you can. Life is not an easy journey and can take all kinds of unexpected turns. Know that your efforts and work are enough. You should still strive for goals, however, give yourself time and understand what you have on your plate. Your joy and peace are more important that a constantly stressed mindset.

    I totally relate to this and agree on personal expectations. If we set them too high, we set ourselves for a hard fall. When we push ourselves too hard, we lack the balance we need to stay sane. I consider myself to be ambitious and yet my ambition drove me into depression. So, I learned to take a step back, take a day to relax and become a mater at time management. No, Rome isnโ€™t built in a day. But, if we see each effort small effort, no matter how minor as a little win, all those little wins add up to success.
